How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Overlapping batch means for MCMC standard errors

Definition

Inputs: Real outputs y1,…,yn, an integer n≥2, and an integer batch size b with 1≤b<n. For an MCMC run, yi=f(Xi) for the chosen real-valued observable f.

Outputs: The sample mean yˉn, the overlapping-batch-means estimate σ^OBM2, and its estimated Monte Carlo standard error.

  1. Compute the sample mean yˉn=1n∑i=1nyi.

  2. For each starting index j=1,…,n−b+1, compute the overlapping batch mean yˉj(b)=1b∑i=jj+b−1yi.

  3. Return the overlapping-batch-means variance estimate σ^OBM2=nb(n−b)(n−b+1)∑j=1n−b+1(yˉj(b)−yˉn)2.

  4. Return the estimated Monte Carlo standard error MCSE⁡^(yˉn)=σ^OBM2/n.

All sums are finite, the denominator is positive because b<n, and the variance estimate is nonnegative. The procedure always returns a number for the stated finite input. It does not by itself assert a CLT or consistency; consistency requires the hypotheses of the overlapping-batch-means theorem.

Dependency tree · two levels

6 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
