How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Rank-thresholded least squares by the singular value decomposition

Definition

Input A∈Fm×n, b∈Fm, a rank threshold τ≥0, and a finite nonnegative integer bidiagonal-QR sweep budget N, with F=R or C; vector residuals use the Euclidean norm of The norm ∥v∥=⟨v,v⟩ induced by a real or complex inner product. First compute the Householder bidiagonal reduction. If it returns range-failure, stop with inconclusive, identify the failed stage as Householder reduction, and return its supplied partial factors and stored transformations, together with any available diagnostics; do not request a bidiagonal matrix or residual reports that the failed call did not supply. Only after successful reduction call the finite-budget bidiagonal QR procedure with deflation tolerance zero and no additional sparsity cleanup. If that call returns range-failure or budget-exhausted, stop with inconclusive, identify the failed stage as bidiagonal QR, and return its supplied partial work matrix, accumulators, transformation lists, deflation record, and available residual reports. No failure or budget-exhausted branch claims a least-squares solution.

On exact-arithmetic convergence, use the exact SVD record A=UΣV∗ from the returned transformation products and diagonal candidates. Set q=#{i:σi>τ}, form Aτ=UΣτV∗ and the canonical truncated pseudoinverse Aτ+ of The truncated singular-value pseudoinverse obtained by discarding singular values below a declared numerical-rank threshold, and compute xτ=Aτ+b. Return xτ, the declared threshold, q, the model residual ∥Aτxτ−b∥2, the original residual ∥Axτ−b∥2, and the discarded tail size σq+1 (defined as 0 for q=p=min⁡(m,n)). The strict comparison σi>τ is used, so values equal to the threshold are discarded. In finite precision, use singular-value estimates (U^,Σ^,V^) to form I^={i:σ^i>τ}, A^τ=U^Σ^τV^∗, and the coordinate candidate x^=V^Σ^I^+U^∗b, where Σ^I^+ has diagonal entries 1/σ^i for i∈I^ and zero otherwise; compute both residuals and label the threshold count unverified unless a certified error interval separates every compared value from τ. This finite-precision candidate is not called a certified numerical rank or a minimum-norm least-squares solution.

19 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
