How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Reparameterized variational training

Definition

Inputs are a fixed nonempty finite data set X=(x1,…,xN); a VAE model and admissible encoder from the preceding definition; a parameter-independent base law ρ and pathwise map gϕ for every xi; an initial parameter η0=(θ0,ϕ0); a finite positive integer T; and positive learning rates α0,…,αT−1. Require the hypotheses of the dominated pathwise-gradient theorem at every parameter value reached by the procedure, and require each update below to remain in its open admissible parameter domain. Let N be the union of the theorem's common null set for finite positive log values and its null set on which the sample-path C1 condition may fail; thus N is a common ρ-null set for all data indices and parameter values.

Set η0=(θ0,ϕ0). For each t=0,…,T−1:

  1. Draw It uniformly from {1,…,N} and draw ϵt from ρ, with It and ϵt independent and the pair (It,ϵt) independent of all earlier random draws.
  2. If ϵt∈N, set ht=0. Otherwise set zt=gϕt(ϵt,xIt) and evaluate ht=log⁡γθt(zt;xIt)−log⁡qϕt(zt∣xIt).
  3. If ϵt∈N, set Gt=0. Otherwise, holding ϵt and It fixed, compute the Euclidean gradient Gt=∇(θ,ϕ)[log⁡γθ(gϕ(ϵt,xIt);xIt)−log⁡qϕ(gϕ(ϵt,xIt)∣xIt)]∣(θ,ϕ)=ηt.
  4. Update ηt+1=ηt+αtGt.

Return (η0,…,ηT) and (ht,Gt)0≤t<T. This finite procedure specifies stochastic ascent on the finite-average ELBO; it makes no claim that the iterates converge or reach a global maximum.

Remarks

At a fixed current parameter satisfying the gradient theorem's hypotheses, a fresh independent draw has the unbiased pathwise-gradient and finite-coordinate-variance guarantees proved there. In round t, this is a conditional guarantee given the preceding draws, which fix ηt; no unconditional finite-variance claim over the random trajectory is made. The Axiom of Choice identifies this ELBO as a lower bound on log evidence under the corollary's hypotheses.

If the prior and encoder are Gaussian and the expectation of their log-density difference is available analytically, that term can be evaluated exactly instead of sampled. This removes Monte Carlo variation from that term only; the decoder log-likelihood may still be sampled, and no universal variance or training guarantee follows.

Dependency tree · two levels

13 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
