How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Finite-budget augmented-Lagrangian multiplier method
Definition
Fix a program as in
Equality and inequality augmented Lagrangians and multiplier updates, a penalty
, finite positive integer outer cap , finite positive integer per-call inner cap ,
tolerances , and KKT tolerance . A supplied
finite-budget inner procedure receives
, performs at most inner
iterations, and returns one of: success(x_k^+,\widehat\epsilon_k) with
and
; budget-exhausted(x_{\rm last},\widehat\epsilon_{\rm last})
with and
; or
failure(data) when it cannot continue or report a residual. Each inner
iteration and report computation is finite, and the procedure returns by its
cap.
Initialize , , and . For :
- Call the inner procedure with cap . On
budget-exhausted(x_{\rm last},\widehat\epsilon_{\rm last}), returninner-budget-exhaustedwith current , that point, and residual. Onfailure(data), returninner-failurewith the data. If a purported success reports a residual exceeding , returninner-failurewith the reported data. Otherwise store its reported inner residual . - Set
- Set . If ,
return
kkt-tolerance-reachedwith , , , and ; otherwise set and continue.
If all outer iterations finish without that test passing, return
outer-budget-exhausted with , , the last KKT
residual , and inner residual . The routine
claims neither convergence nor that the inner procedure succeeds within its
cap.
Remarks
Domain preservation, finite-cap termination and reported-residual guarantees are proved in The augmented-Lagrangian multiplier procedure preserves its domain and returns within its caps ↗.

4 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
