How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Finite-precision reduced-QR KKT solve with certified residual status

Definition

Let K=[HATA0]∈RN×N be an active KKT matrix, where A has full row rank and H is positive definite on ker⁡A, and let b∈RN. By The SQP KKT matrix is nonsingular under positive reduced curvature, K is nonsingular. Also supply a terminating exact-storage routine which, for each requested real entry, either returns that same value with an exact representability certificate in the selected floating-point set or returns unavailable. Before QR, invoke this routine on every entry of the intended K and b, in increasing row and column order for K and increasing index for b. If any call is unavailable or its equality/representability certificate is not verified, return numerical-failure without a solve certificate. Otherwise use these unchanged stored values, still denoted K,b, for both the solve and residual evaluation. No rounded conversion is performed: every successful residual certificate below concerns the original intended data. Assume Nu<1, γN+3<1/8, and the successful-operation hypotheses of Operationwise real and complex floating point arithmetic with rounded square roots and fused multiply-add.

Set R(0)=K. For k=0,…,N−1, call Scaled Householder reflector formation and application on the active column Rk:N−1,k(k) and trailing block Rk:N−1,k+1:N(k). Set R(k+1) equal to R(k) with the returned active block written into those rows and columns, leaving earlier rows and columns unchanged, and store the returned reflector. If a call fails, return numerical-failure. After the loop set R^=R(N). Call the stored reflectors on b in the same order, on the matching active row slices and without column overwrites; call the result y^. Solve R^z^=y^ by descending substitution, for i=N−1,…,0: compute the sequential rounded dot si=fl⁡(∑j=i+1N−1R^ijz^j), then ti=fl⁡(y^i−si) and z^i=fl⁡(ti/R^ii), following Forward and backward substitution for triangular linear systems. If reflector application or substitution fails, return numerical-failure. The perturbation bounds for these procedures are supplied by Computed reduced QR least squares is backward stable for full column rank.

For a returned stored vector z^, compute in the specified order v^=fl⁡(Kz^) and r^=fl⁡(v^−b). Use Rounded matrix products give certified linear and normal-equation residual allowances with A=K, x=z^, and y=b to compute gN=1+6u1−(N−1)u−1,W=gN∥K∥F∥z^∥2+u(∥v^∥2+∥b∥2), where the product and subtraction use successful sequential dot products and (N−1)u<1. Let κN be the local coefficient specified by The scaled computed Householder step satisfies the local backward error premise, and set βQ=(1+κN)N−1,βb=βQ,βK=βQ+γN+3(1+βQ), where γj=ju/(1−ju) is defined by the operationwise model. The QR theorem supplies an exactly orthonormal Q^, a triangular R^, and perturbations satisfying K+ΔQ=Q^R^,(R^+ΔR)z^=Q^T(b+δb), with ∥ΔQ∥F≤βQ∥K∥F, ∥ΔR∥F≤γN+3∥R^∥F, and ∥δb∥2≤βb∥b∥2. Define ΔK=ΔQ+Q^ΔR. Return η=min⁡{∥r^∥2+W,βK∥K∥F∥z^∥2+βb∥b∥2} using exact norms or certified upward bounds. If residual evaluation or a certified bound fails, return numerical-failure. A successful return certifies a residual upper bound, not a small residual or an accurate exact solution by itself.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: A nonsingular square KKT matrix, right-hand side, floating-point model hypotheses, and successful QR and triangular solves.

[F1]

Operationwise real and complex floating point arithmetic with rounded square roots and fused multiply-add states the operationwise rounding hypotheses and successful-operation convention.

[F2]

Computed reduced QR least squares is backward stable for full column rank supplies K+ΔQ=Q^R^ with exactly orthonormal Q^, the rounded triangular solve (R^+ΔR)z^=Q^T(b+δb), and the stated perturbation bounds.

[F3]

Rounded matrix products give certified linear and normal-equation residual allowances: for the specified rounded product and subtraction, ∥r^−(Kz^−b)∥2≤W.

[F4]

The SQP KKT matrix is nonsingular under positive reduced curvature makes the input KKT matrix nonsingular under the stated rank and curvature hypotheses.

[F5]

The scaled computed Householder step satisfies the local backward error premise defines the local coefficient κN used in the QR backward bound.

[F6]

Scaled Householder reflector formation and application defines the active-column QR step and its stored-reflector application to a separate block.

[F7]

Forward and backward substitution for triangular linear systems defines the descending row recursion for the upper-triangular solve.

[A1]

The terminating exact-storage admission has succeeded and its stored K,b equal the intended inputs entrywise. Also N≥1, Nu<1, γN+3<1/8, (N−1)u<1, all factorization and residual operations succeed under the operationwise model, and any norm upper bounds used in η are certified without overflow.

Proof

The admission in [A1] supplies stored K,b equal to the intended data; [F6] and [F7] specify the scaled QR and descending substitution used by the procedure. The factorization and transformed right-hand side are therefore admissible stored operands. By [F4], K is nonsingular and, being square, has full column rank, so the perturbation equations of [F2] apply under [A1]. Their additional perturbed-least-squares uniqueness condition is not needed for this residual calculation. Multiplying the triangular equation by Q^ and using Q^Q^T=I gives Q^(R^+ΔR)z^=b+δb. Substituting Q^R^=K+ΔQ yields (K+ΔK)z^=b+δb for ΔK=ΔQ+Q^ΔR. Orthogonality gives ∥Q^ΔR∥F=∥ΔR∥F, and ∥R^∥F=∥K+ΔQ∥F≤(1+βQ)∥K∥F. Hence ∥ΔK∥F≤(βQ+γN+3(1+βQ))∥K∥F=βK∥K∥F. Rearrangement now gives ∥Kz^−b∥2≤∥δb∥2+∥ΔK∥F∥z^∥2≤βb∥b∥2+βK∥K∥F∥z^∥2.

By [F3] and the triangle inequality, ∥Kz^−b∥2≤∥r^∥2+W. Both entries in the returned minimum are upper bounds, so their minimum is also an upper bound. Failure of any required operation exits without a certificate.
