How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Outside the strong regime, the MAC intersection can be too small

Statement refuted

The MAC-intersection formula of Capacity region of a finite two-user interference channel under strong interference, if applied to every finite two-user interference channel without its strong-interference hypothesis, gives the exact capacity region.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: All information quantities in this example are measured in bits: I2=I/ln⁡2 and H2=H/ln⁡2 for the nats-valued supplier conventions. Independent messages and the binary no-interference channel with X1=X2=Y1=Y2={0,1}, Y1=X1, and Y2=X2.

[F1]

Finite two-user interference channel and strong-interference regime: the strong regime requires both mutual-information inequalities for every product input law.

[F2]

Capacity region of a finite two-user interference channel under strong interference: only under [F1] does the MAC-intersection formula give capacity.

Counterexample

1.1F1F2givenalgebra

Under independent uniform inputs, I2(X1;Y1∣X2)=1 while I2(X1;Y2∣X2)=0. Thus the first strong-interference inequality fails, so the hypothesis of [F2] is absent.

1.2givenalgebra

Each receiver observes its own input noiselessly. A binary code of rate below one can therefore be sent independently by each user. Since each output alphabet has size two, no rate can exceed one bit per use. Taking closure gives the true capacity square.

2.1F2givenstep 1.2algebra∎

For every finite time-sharing variable Q and every conditional product input law, each output is binary, so I2(X1,X2;Yi∣Q)≤H2(Yi∣Q)≤1. Consequently every rate pair in the entire union and its closure asserted by the formula in [F2] satisfies R1+R2≤1 bit per use. This excludes (1,1), which step 1.2 places in the true capacity square. Hence the formula without the strong-interference hypothesis is false.

7 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
