How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Error budget for computed Tikhonov inversion

Definition

Let X,Y be real or complex Hilbert spaces over the same scalar field, let A:X→Y be a compact linear forward map (the closure of A(B) is compact in Y for every bounded set B⊆X), and let Ah:X→Y be a bounded linear discretized map with finite-dimensional range. For a datum b∈Y, let λ>0 be the coefficient of ∥x∥X2 in the Tikhonov objective ∥Ax−b∥Y2+λ∥x∥X2. Supply adjoints A∗:Y→X and Ah∗:Y→X satisfying ⟨Ax,y⟩Y=⟨x,A∗y⟩X and ⟨Ahx,y⟩Y=⟨x,Ah∗y⟩X, where the inner products are linear in their first arguments. Assume the shifted normal operators A∗A+λIX and Ah∗Ah+λIX are bijective, and define Rλ=(A∗A+λIX)−1A∗,Rλ,h=(Ah∗Ah+λIX)−1Ah∗.

For a truth x†∈X, data perturbation e∈Y, and δ≥0 with ∥e∥≤δ, put y=Ax†,yδ=y+e,yh,δ=Ahx†+e,dh=(A−Ah)x†=yδ−yh,δ. For any returned output x~h∈X, define its exact discrete normal-equation residual by rh,h=(Ah∗Ah+λIX)x~h−Ah∗yh,δ. The five-channel error budget is the ordered tuple (bbias, bdata, boperator, bpre, bsolve), where bbias=x†−Rλy,bdata=Rλy−Rλyδ,boperator=(Rλ−Rλ,h)yh,δ,bpre=Rλdh,bsolve=Rλ,hyh,δ−x~h. The five entries are, in order, the truth-bias, data-perturbation, regularized-operator, pre-inversion, and algebraic-solve error vectors. The scalar total budget is the sum of the five channel norms. The raw pre-inversion forward residual is dh; its reconstruction contribution is bpre. The operator channel measures the difference between the regularized exact and discretized operators. The solve channel measures the returned output's difference from the exact discrete Tikhonov output. The definition supplies no rate or arithmetic residual certificate.

4 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
