How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Simpson rule integrates a cubic exactly on one two-panel block

Example

On [0,2], let f(x)=x3. With n=2 and h=1, the Simpson value is

QS(f;0,2,2)=13(f(0)+4f(1)+f(2))=4,

which equals the exact integral ∫02x3 dx=4. The full two-panel block is exact because the rule annihilates the Peano remainder of every cubic.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: f(x)=x3 on [0,2] and the composite Simpson rule with n=2.

[F1]

Composite Simpson rule on an even uniform grid: for n=2, the returned value is h3(f(x0)+4f(x1)+f(x2)).

[F3]

Composite Simpson rule is exact through cubic degree: Simpson is exact for every displayed polynomial of degree at most three.

[F5]

Every continuous function on a closed nondegenerate rectangle in Rm is Riemann integrable: x↦x3 is Riemann integrable on [0,2] because it is continuous.

Verification

1.1givenF2F4F5

The function x3 is continuous and integrable by [F5]. By [F4], x4/4 is an antiderivative, so [F2] gives ∫02x3 dx=4.

2.1F1step 1.1algebra

Here h=1 and the nodes are 0,1,2. By [F1], QS=13(0+4⋅1+8)=4. Thus the rule value equals the integral.

3.1F3step 2.1∎

The equality is the cubic case of [F3], since x3 has degree three.

Dependency tree · two levels

45 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
