How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

A tiny CARE residual is inconclusive near the stability boundary

Example

Let ε=10−8 and take scalar CARE data A=ε, B=R=1, C=ε, hence Q=ε2 and G=1. Use the candidate X^=1.1ε.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The scalar data above and the CARE residual-ball criterion of A CARE residual and Lyapunov margin certify a unique stabilizing root in a matrix ball.

[F1]

Standard CARE and DARE data, equations, and conventions: Fc(X)=A∗X+XA−XGX+Q and Ac(X)=A−GX.

[F2]

A CARE residual and Lyapunov margin certify a unique stabilizing root in a matrix ball: a radius must satisfy κ(r+gρ2)≤ρ and 2κgρ<1 for its fixed-point certificate.

Proof

1.1F1givenalgebra

The scalar CARE is 2εX−X2+ε2=0, with positive root X∗=(1+2)ε and stable closed loop Ac(X∗)=−2ε. At the candidate, A^c=−0.1ε<0, the exact residual is r=∣Fc(X^)∣=1.99ε2=1.99⋅10−16, and g=1.

2.1F2step 1.1algebra∎

The scalar Lyapunov derivative is L(E)=2A^cE=−0.2εE, so its inverse norm is κ=1/(0.2ε)=5⋅108. For every ρ>0, r+ρ2≥2r ρ, so κ(r+ρ2)≥2κr ρ>ρ because 2κr>14. Thus no radius satisfies even the self-map condition, despite the absolute residual being below 2⋅10−16 and the exact stabilizing root existing. The residual alone is inconclusive because the inverse Lyapunov factor is large near the imaginary axis.

14 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
