How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Exact T period and a non-exact Rz phase

Example

Let T=diag⁡(1,ω) with ω=eiπ/4, and let ζ64=e2πi/64. The gate T has exact period eight, while Rz(π/16) is not an exact one-qubit Clifford+T word.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: ω=eiπ/4, ζ64=eiπ/32, and Rz(θ)=diag⁡(e−iθ/2,eiθ/2).

[F1]

Clifford+T circuit entries lie in the dyadic cyclotomic ring: every exact one-qubit Clifford+T word has entries in D=Z[ζ8,1/2]⊆Q(ζ8).

[F2]

Φn is irreducible in Q[t] for every n≥1: the cyclotomic polynomial Φn is irreducible over Q.

Verification

1.1givenalgebra

Since ω8=1, direct matrix powering gives T8=diag⁡(1,ω8)=I. No smaller positive power is the identity because ω has order eight.

2.1F1F2F3givenalgebra∎

The lower-right entry of Rz(π/16) is eiπ/32=ζ64. If an exact H/T word equaled this rotation, [F1] would put ζ64 in Q(ζ8). But ζ8=ζ648, so Q(ζ8)⊆Q(ζ64); containing ζ64 in the smaller field would force equality. By [F2]–[F3], these fields have degrees φ(8)=4 and φ(64)=32 respectively: among residues modulo 2m, exactly the 2m−1 odd residues are coprime. The unequal degrees contradict equality, so no exact H/T word implements this rotation.

Remarks

The example uses the necessary direction of the ring characterization only; it does not rely on the converse theorem or on an approximation algorithm.
