How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

A singular B can give a regular pencil with an infinite generalized eigenvalue

Example

Take A=I2 and B=diag⁡(1,0). The matrix B is singular, but the pencil is regular and has one finite eigenvalue and one infinite eigenvalue.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The pair (A,B) and the homogeneous eigenvalue convention of Regular matrix pencils and homogeneous generalized eigenvalues.

[F1]

Regular matrix pencils and homogeneous generalized eigenvalues: regularity means det⁡(A−λB) is not identically zero, and homogeneous eigenpairs solve det⁡(βA−αB)=0 with (α,β)≠(0,0).

Verification

1.1givenF1algebra

Direct calculation gives det⁡(A−λB)=1−λ, a nonzero polynomial, so the pencil is regular although det⁡B=0.

2.1F1step 1.1algebra∎

The homogeneous determinant is det⁡(βA−αB)=det⁡(β−α00β)=β(β−α). Its projective roots are [1:1], the finite eigenvalue 1, and [1:0], the infinite eigenvalue.

2 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
