How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The diffusion Schur complement is positive and minimizes energy
Statement
Let be a self-adjoint positive-definite operator on a finite-dimensional real inner-product direct sum . Then is positive definite, is positive definite on , and for every ,
In particular, the local Schur operators in Finite-dimensional backward-Euler diffusion transmission model are positive definite.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The block matrix is self-adjoint positive definite on , as are the local backward-Euler blocks in Finite-dimensional backward-Euler diffusion transmission model.
Finite-dimensional backward-Euler diffusion transmission model: each is self-adjoint positive definite and its interface Schur complement is .
Proof
For , . Thus has zero kernel and is invertible because it is an endomorphism of a finite-dimensional space.
For fixed , put . Expanding the quadratic form and completing the square gives . The first term is nonnegative and vanishes exactly at , proving the minimum formula.
If , then , so positive definiteness of gives . Hence is positive definite; applying this to each in [F1] proves the final claim.

1 result within one dependency step of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
