How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Multilinear components of symmetric-minor and Pfaffian ideals
Statement
Let be a field, , and . Write and let be the standard basis of . In the polynomial ring on the generic symmetric matrix , give multidegree . For of size , order each subset increasingly and write for the corresponding minor. The multidegree component of the ideal generated by all -minors is spanned by where and are disjoint and is a perfect matching (a partition into two-element blocks) of . For a generic alternating matrix with and , give multidegree . Fix . For , let be the principal submatrix with indices in increasing order. The multidegree component of the ideal generated by principal Pfaffians of size is spanned by where and is a perfect matching of . More precisely, for a perfect matching of (that is, a partition into two-element blocks), order each pair so and order the pairs by ; set , the sign of that permutation of . Then . An empty spanning family denotes the zero subspace.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The polynomial rings and multigradings in the Statement.
Proof
Each indicated minor is multihomogeneous, with degree . If , some label has degree at least , so multiplying by any polynomial with nonnegative multidegrees cannot produce degree . If and are disjoint, the complementary multidegree is one copy of for each unused label; its monomials are exactly products of off-diagonal variables over perfect matchings of those labels. Since the ideal component is a sum of homogeneous generator multiples, these are precisely its spanning elements.
A Pfaffian generator on already has multidegree , because every term uses each label of once. Its complementary multidegree is therefore one copy of for each label outside , whose monomials are exactly the stated perfect-matching products. Homogeneity of the generated ideal gives both inclusions and proves the Pfaffian assertion.
