How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
An explicit peripheral basis for nonparabolic adjoint torus homology
Statement
Let be a field of characteristic different from , and let commute. Write and suppose . Give the torus an ordered pair of based oriented generating loops , and give its adjoint local system intrinsic monodromies and on . Here monodromy acts on column coefficient vectors on the left. Set Then , both summands are preserved by , and are the identity on . There is an explicit split chain model where and , in the ordered edge coordinates . Its subcomplex is contractible, so In particular the two displayed peripheral classes are an actual basis, without imposing any norm-one normalization on . The splitting, contraction and classes commute with field extensions and simultaneous conjugation of . All their matrix entries are rational expressions in the entries of , with denominators powers of and . This assertion concerns boundary-torus homology only: it makes no claim about the rank of its inclusion into the homology of a knot exterior.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The field, commuting matrices, nonzero discriminant, ordered torus generators and specified left intrinsic monodromies in the Statement.
Cellular chains with local coefficients compute intrinsic singular local homology; for supplied lifts their boundary is the signed attaching-incidence matrix acting by the specified monodromies (Cellular chains compute local homology). We use its left coefficient convention and do not regard a left action as a right action without inversion.
Proof
The fixed line and a rational complementary plane. The direct determinant identity gives , and therefore , , and . In particular . The map defined by is a projection: , its image is and its kernel is . Thus . Commutation of implies . For either or , the direct identity gives . Hence preserve and commute with .
An actual inverse on the complementary plane. On the inverse of is the explicit operator . To check this without a splitting-field assumption, the polynomial either has a root in or is irreducible, in which case its quotient gives a quadratic extension. In that field its two distinct roots are , and a change of basis diagonalizes , since the two kernels of and are distinct one-dimensional subspaces. In these coordinates , is exactly the off-diagonal plane, and has eigenvalues on it. Consequently on , and multiplication gives there. This identity descends to , because scalar extension of a finite matrix over a field is injective. The two factors commute, so is a two-sided inverse. It commutes with because commutes with . This finite calculation uses no chosen eigenvectors in the final formulas.
The actual torus chain complex. Use one vertex, the two oriented edges and the square whose attaching path is . Lift its lower left corner and transport a coefficient from that corner along its four sides. The bottom and oppositely oriented top edges give coefficients and in the coordinate; the right and oppositely oriented left edges give and in the coordinate. Thus the square boundary is . An edge with monodromy has boundary on its coefficient, which gives as stated. The two composites cancel because . This is the supplied-lift cellular model in [F1], so it computes the actual intrinsic homology, rather than an independently assumed complex. The direct-sum decomposition of step1.1 splits this entire complex into its and parts.
A chain contraction, including both ends of the complex. On the part define by and by , and put all other homotopy maps zero. Then . Also . Finally and ; their sum is because commutes with . Thus in each of degrees . The summand contributes no homology. On both differentials vanish, leaving one, two and one copies of in those degrees. Their cycles are precisely the vertex, the two supplied oriented edges, and the supplied oriented square with coefficient . This proves the stated basis and not merely a dimension count.
Compatibility and exact scope. For a field extension, the same formulas for remain defined because and remain nonzero; the split contractible and zero-differential summands persist, so their classes identify the actual extended homology. For simultaneous conjugation by an invertible matrix , the map sends to the new , intertwines , and preserves all traces in ; it therefore carries the splitting and contraction to the displayed new ones and takes each named peripheral cycle to its corresponding cycle. The formulas use only addition, multiplication and division by and in the entries of the original matrices (the inverse of an matrix is its polynomial adjugate). The eigenvalue extension in step2.1 verified an identity, and supplies no extra scalar choice to these formulas. The hypothesis excludes the parabolic and scalar cases; neither their homology nor any exterior inclusion rank is asserted. All conclusions, including the fixed order of the two peripheral classes, follow.

An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
