How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: A layered ReLU network with widths , a layer index , and an affine image of dimension at most .
An arrangement of affine hyperplanes in dimension has at most full-dimensional regions (Hyperplane arrangement upper count and general-position count).
Each hidden unit applies to its affine preactivation (ReLU feedforward networks and complexity conventions).
Proof
An empty current cell has no descendants. Otherwise let be the affine hull of the current cell's image, with , and write the restricted preactivations as . There are finitely many realized active subsets ; choose one image point for each. Choose smaller than every positive number among the , taking any positive if there are none. At each witness, is strictly positive exactly for and strictly negative otherwise. Thus every original pattern, including a boundary-only pattern, occurs in a distinct full-dimensional chamber of the shifted affine functions on . Constant restrictions have fixed strict signs and add no hyperplanes. By [F1], there are at most such patterns; for there is at most one. For a fixed , the original pattern constraints are affine strict or weak half-spaces on the current cell, so they define at most one convex subcell. By [F2], the layer output there keeps the coordinates in and sets the others to zero, so its affine image dimension is at most .
Backward induction in the displayed recurrence shows that is nondecreasing in : increasing adds nonnegative terms and does not decrease any argument. Therefore, among at most distinct active subsets its sum is maximized by choosing the subsets of largest cardinality. Those can be taken to have sizes with multiplicities for ; their total number is exactly . The associated next dimensions are at most , giving the displayed recurrence. Induction backward from proves the claim.
