How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Weak-lq thresholding error from an entrywise deviation event
Statement
Let from Weak-lq covariance class with directional sub-Gaussian tails, let be the output of Entrywise-thresholded sample covariance with threshold , and suppose Then where depends only on ; for , the class means at most nonzero off-diagonal entries per column and one may take .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: , , a covariance matrix in the stated weak-lq class, and the entrywise event in the Statement.
The off-diagonal magnitudes sorted in column satisfy for ; for there are at most nonzero off-diagonal entries in each column (Weak-lq covariance class with directional sub-Gaussian tails).
The estimator keeps a diagonal entry and retains an off-diagonal sample entry exactly when its magnitude is at least (Entrywise-thresholded sample covariance).
For a real symmetric matrix, the operator norm equals the maximum absolute Rayleigh quotient (A symmetric matrix operator norm is its largest absolute Rayleigh quotient).
Proof
On the event in the Statement, each diagonal error is at most . For an off-diagonal entry that is retained, and . If it is removed, then , and its error is .
For , [F1] and step 1.1 bound every off-diagonal column error sum by . For , fix a column, put , , and The class bound in [F1] gives . If , then because grouping gives at most per block, and . If , let . The first terms contribute at most . Grouping the tail into blocks gives so the tail contributes at most ; here the exponent is negative and . Thus for either case each off-diagonal column error sum is at most for a finite constant depending only on . Adding the diagonal error bound from step 1.1 bounds every row sum by . For , the same total is at most .
For any unit vector , [F3] identifies the operator norm with the maximum absolute Rayleigh quotient. With , symmetry and give because is symmetric, its absolute column sums equal its row sums, and . Taking the maximum over unit and using step 2.1 yields the claimed operator bound.

8 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
