How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Correctness and Termination of Two-Level Elimination
Statement
For , the elimination procedure of Exact Two-Level Elimination of a Unitary terminates after at most Givens steps and returns an exact factorization of into the recorded two-level adjoints followed by a diagonal unitary. The number of diagonal entries is ; entries equal to need no phase gate.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: and the exact-arithmetic operations, zero tests, loop bounds, and update matrices specified in Exact Two-Level Elimination of a Unitary.
Exact Two-Level Elimination of a Unitary defines the descending row updates and records each embedded in chronological order; it returns the formal product of their adjoints and the terminal matrix.
Proof
If , then and direct multiplication gives and . Thus the row operation is defined and left multiplication by its coordinate embedding preserves unitarity of . If , skipping the operation leaves the desired entry zero.
Inductively, before processing column , columns have zero entries below their diagonal positions. Each row pair used for column has indices at least , so both entries in every earlier column are zero and the row operation preserves those zeros. Descending therefore makes column zero below its diagonal without undoing a zero already made in that column.
After the finite loops, is upper triangular and unitary. Its first column has only its first entry nonzero, which has modulus one. Orthogonality with every later column forces the first entry of each later column to be zero. Removing the first row and column leaves an upper-triangular unitary block; induction proves that is diagonal with unit-modulus diagonal entries.
Rearranging gives exactly. The finite loops have iterations (zero for ), with at most one row elimination per iteration, so they terminate with at most that many eliminations and at most diagonal phases; the zero tests skip any already-zero entry. Under the convention that a matrix product acts on column states from right to left, the same identity orders the actions as first and then .

An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
