How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

The Roe flux is consistent and conservative

Statement

For any supplied Roe matrix, the Roe flux is consistent: f^Roe(u,u)=f(u). For a finite periodic array define Ujnew=Uj−ν(f^j+1/2−f^j−1/2), where f^j+1/2=f^Roe(Uj,Uj+1) and indices are modulo n, with n≥1. For any scalar ν, the update preserves the sum of cell states. The Roe jump property is the defining matrix identity in Roe linearization and Roe numerical flux and is not an entropy assertion.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: A Roe matrix for each state pair and the flux definition.

[F1]

Roe linearization and Roe numerical flux: f^Roe=12(fL+fR)−12∣A~∣(uR−uL) and A~(u,u)=Df(u).

Proof

1.1givenF1algebra

If uL=uR=u, the jump is zero, so [F1] gives f^Roe(u,u)=12(f(u)+f(u))=f(u).

2.1givenF1algebra∎

Substituting the displayed periodic update into the sum of all cells gives −ν∑j(f^j+1/2−f^j−1/2). Each interface flux occurs once with each sign, so the sum is zero. The Roe jump identity is not used in this telescoping argument and no entropy inequality follows from it.
