How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
A noncompact phase domain with no attained mixture maximum
A constructed continuous entropy extension that is positive and concave on a convex ambient domain but restricted to a noncompact generator set omitting its maximizing barycenter; it makes no material claim.
Statement refuted
Let , let with noncompact and convex, and let be a nonempty family of Borel probability measures on sharing a prescribed barycenter. The statement refuted is that is always attained whenever for a bounded, positive, continuous concave function . Here convexity of means for and , and concavity means
Example
Let , which is noncompact: the open cover for has no finite subcover. Let and use dimensionless coordinate . For constants in , define the ambient entropy extension and its restriction by
For and ,
so is concave on the convex ambient domain. It is continuous, bounded, and positive since . The admissible generator set excludes the maximizing point . Declare all Borel probability measures on with fixed barycenter feasible, with entropy per mole . For , define the point mass if and otherwise for every Borel set . It is countably additive because at most one set in a disjoint family can contain , and .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The noncompact Borel domain , the restricted entropy , and all Borel probability measures on with mean zero as the feasible family.
The Borel sigma-algebra of a topological space, Probability measures and probability spaces, and Measure space and integral: Feasible mixtures are countably additive Borel probability measures of total mass one, and their integrals use the stated measure convention.
Counterexample
Since on , every feasible is nonnegative and bounded. For , put . Their union is ; since , countable additivity implies for some . On , , and on its complement . For any nonnegative simple function , the measure integral definition [F1] therefore gives
Indeed, refine the finitely many level sets of by and its complement; each simple-function coefficient is bounded by the corresponding pointwise bound on that piece, so the simple-integral formula [F1] gives the inequality. The strict upper bound is independent of , hence its supremum also satisfies .
For each , the measure is a Borel probability measure on , has mean zero, and satisfies . Letting shows that the supremum is . Step 1.1 shows that no feasible measure attains it. Thus the false statement fails even with a bounded positive continuous concave extension, because the admissible generator set excludes its maximizing barycenter.
