How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
A finite flat module over a Noetherian ring is finite projective
Statement
Let be a Noetherian commutative ring and let be a finite flat -module. Then is finite projective.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A Noetherian commutative ring and a finite flat -module .
Over a Noetherian ring, a finite module has a finite presentation (Over a Noetherian ring a module is Noetherian exactly when it is finitely generated, exactly when it is finitely presented).
Flatness gives the equational criterion for each finite relation (The equational criterion characterizes flat modules by lifting finite relations on generators).
A module is projective exactly when every map from it lifts across an epimorphism (Equivalent characterizations of projective modules).
Proof
By [L1], choose a finite presentation . Put , and write the columns of as relation rows , so is generated by those rows. Start with , where is the identity matrix and is the column of the .
Process the relation rows in order. Suppose and the first rows satisfy . For the next row , the equality says . Applying [L2] to this one finite relation gives a finite column of elements of and a matrix with and . Replace by . The new matrix satisfies , and each earlier relation remains zero because . After the finite last stage, write with for every . This finite induction makes only finitely many choices.
Let have entries, and define by sending to the th row of . Every generator of is killed by because . Thus descends to . Define by sending its basis vectors to the entries of . The identity says for every generator , hence .
Let be any epimorphism and any map. For each of the finitely many basis vectors of , choose a preimage in of its image under , and extend linearly to a lift . Then lifts because . By [L3], is projective. It is finite by hypothesis, so it is finite projective.
