How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

In a preadditive category with a zero object, a morphism is epic exactly when its cokernel is zero

Statement

Let f:A→B be a morphism in a preadditive category with a zero object, and assume its cokernel exists. Then f is epic if and only if its cokernel is zero.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: A morphism f:A→B in a preadditive category with a zero object.

[L2]

The opposite of a preadditive category is preadditive (The opposite of a preadditive category is preadditive).

Proof

technique · direct
1.1L2

In the opposite category, f becomes a morphism fop:B→A. By [L2], that opposite category is again preadditive with a zero object, and epicity of f is monicity of fop.

2.1L1step 1.1

Applying [L1] to fop says that fop is monic exactly when its kernel is zero. But that kernel is precisely the cokernel of f viewed back in the original category.

3.1step 2.1∎

Therefore f is epic exactly when its cokernel is zero.
