How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Statistical tests, rejection regions, power functions and size

Definition

Let (S,S) be a measurable space, the data space (Measurable spaces and measurable sets, Sigma-algebras); let Θ be a nonempty set, the parameter set; let (Pθ)θ∈Θ be a family of probability measures on (S,S) (Probability measures and probability spaces), the model family; and let Θ0 be a nonempty subset of Θ, the null set. A test of the null set Θ0 within the family (Pθ)θ∈Θ is a set R∈S, the rejection region; the test rejects the null set on the event that the datum s∈S lies in R, and retains it otherwise.

The power function of the test is β:Θ⟶[0,1],β(θ):=Pθ(R), and the size of the test is α:=sup⁡θ∈Θ0β(θ)∈[0,1]. The test has level α′ when its size is at most α′; the smallest such α′ is the size.

Well-definedness and conventions

For each θ the value Pθ(R) is defined because R∈S and Pθ is a measure on S. The set {β(θ):θ∈Θ0} is nonempty because Θ0≠∅, and it is bounded above by 1; the least-upper-bound property of the complete ordered field of reals (Complete ordered field (least-upper-bound property)) therefore supplies its supremum α∈[0,1], uniquely by Complete ordered field (least-upper-bound property). The size is the supremum of the rejection probabilities over the null set for the specified rejection region and model family; no alternative set Θ∖Θ0, no prior distribution on Θ, and no observed datum enter its definition.

The rejection region, the family (Pθ) and the null set are data of the test, not consequences of it. Changing the rejection region or model family may change β and α; changing the null set may change α but leaves β unchanged; a statement that a test has a given size is a statement about the specified triple (S,S,{Pθ}), the specified Θ0 and the specified R.
