How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Covariant derivative of a section in a vector field direction

Definition

For a connection as in Connection on a smooth vector bundle, a smooth vector field X∈Γ(TM) and a section s∈Γ(E), define the covariant derivative in direction X by ∇Xs=(∇s)(X),(∇Xs)(p)=(∇s)p(X(p)). It is a smooth section: in any local coordinates and bundle frame, if the matrix of ∇s has entries bia and X has components Xi, its components are the finite sums ∑ibiaXi. For a single tangent vector v∈TpM, the notation ∇vs means (∇s)p(v). In particular the direction is used only at p, while the section can be differentiated there.

Zero direction gives zero; zero section gives zero by real linearity of ∇. For a zero-dimensional base the sum is empty. Empty base and rank-zero bundle also give the unique zero section. A direction is not required to be nonzero or to extend along any prescribed curve. This is evaluation of supplied data and needs no choice.
