How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Pointwise Maxwell and matter energy-condition vocabulary
Definition
Use the smooth oriented, time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifold, signature , metric , and future cone of Oriented Lorentzian fields, observers and coordinate conventions. Here timelike means , null means and , causal means timelike or null, and a nonzero causal vector is future-directed when , as in that supplier. A future unit observer is a vector with and . At a point , let be a continuous real symmetric bilinear form, represented by the covariant tensor . Define its metric trace by and its raised mixed tensor by .
- The weak energy condition (WEC) holds at when for every future timelike .
- The null energy condition (NEC) holds at when for every nonzero future-directed null .
- The strong energy condition (SEC) holds at when the WEC holds for the trace-reversed tensor .
- The dominant energy condition (DEC) holds at when, for every future-directed timelike , the vector is future causal or zero.
These are pointwise algebraic conditions. They are independent of an Einstein equation or an assertion that a physical material realizes . The continuous regularity suffices for the definitions; any differentiability needed for a conservation identity is a separate hypothesis.
For a future unit observer , observer energy density means . The observer energy-current vector is , and its spatial energy flux is the projection of this vector into the positive rest space .
Remarks
Tong's lecture notes express SEC through a curvature inequality after invoking the Einstein equation. The definition here instead names the pointwise trace-reversed-tensor inequality itself, so no physical field equation is a prerequisite.
In the length-coordinate SI convention, if has stress-energy units , the spatial projection of is an energy-current component with the same units. The corresponding physical energy-flux vector is times that component, in .
