How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Equivariant elliptic-complex index and character
Definition
Let , where is an integer, be a compact torus and a compact smooth manifold without boundary. A smooth left -action is a jointly smooth map with and . Let be finite-rank complex vector bundles on . For each , let be a linear differential operator of finite order , and put . In local coordinates and bundle frames, if , use the positive-frequency principal symbol . The sequence is a complex when for every . It is elliptic when, for every and every nonzero real cotangent vector , the sequence of principal-symbol maps
is exact. Suppose each bundle has a -linearization: a jointly smooth map whose restrictions are complex-linear isomorphisms, with and . The induced section maps
commute with . Require the cohomology spaces to be finite-dimensional. The representation ring is the Grothendieck ring of finite-dimensional continuous complex representations of . Define
For a two-term complex , this gives . This definition concerns elliptic complexes, not transversally elliptic operators.

Remarks
For a -invariant operator on a -manifold, transversally elliptic means its principal symbol is invertible away from the zero section after restriction to , where . A transversally elliptic operator can have an infinite-dimensional kernel; for a compact torus its irreducible characters can occur with finite multiplicity but infinitely many weights, so its index is generally a distribution on , not an element of . It is therefore excluded from this definition.
