How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Euler state, flux, positive set and numerical roles

Definition

Fix a constant γ>1. The one-dimensional ideal-gas Euler state is U=(ρ,m,E)∈Gγ⊂R3, where Gγ={(ρ,m,E):ρ>0,E−m22ρ>0}. For U∈Gγ, define the pressure, velocity, sound speed, and flux by p(U)=(γ−1)(E−m22ρ),u(U)=mρ,c(U)=γp(U)ρ,F(U)=(m,m2ρ+p(U),u(U)(E+p(U))). Thus Gγ is exactly the set with positive density and positive pressure; every displayed map is defined on that open set.

For a periodic uniform mesh with N≥2 cells, width Δx>0, and time step Δt≥0, index cells by i∈Z/NZ and put λ=Δt/Δx. Given cell states Ui∈Gγ, a shared-face flux is one vector F^i+1/2∈R3 assigned to each face and used in both adjacent cell balances. When produced by a two-state numerical flux F^(UL,UR), it is consistent if F^(U,U)=F(U) for every U∈Gγ. The associated one-step update in conservative finite-volume form is Ui+=Ui−λ(F^i+1/2−F^i−1/2). This shared-face form means that the same face vector appears with opposite signs in the two neighboring cell updates. A step is admissible when every output state Ui+ belongs to Gγ; this is a property to prove under specific flux and time-step hypotheses, not part of the update definition.

When the HLL middle branch is used at a face, its supplied speeds satisfy SL<0<SR and the flux is F^HLL(UL,UR)=SRF(UL)−SLF(UR)+SLSR(UR−UL)SR−SL. The speeds are supplied data; their appearance in this formula does not assert that they enclose the waves of an exact nonlinear Riemann solution. The ratio λ is the time step divided by cell width and is not a physical viscosity.

For a specified convex entropy pair, write v for its entropy variable and Fec for a consistent entropy-conservative two-point flux. If D is a symmetric positive-semidefinite matrix, meaning zTDz≥0 for every vector z, and Fec satisfies (v(UR)−v(UL))TFec(UL,UR)=ψ(UR)−ψ(UL), where ψ is the corresponding entropy potential, the entropy-stable dissipative flux is Fes(UL,UR)=Fec(UL,UR)−12D(UL,UR)(v(UR)−v(UL)). Here v=∇η for the chosen entropy η, and the entropy-conservative flux satisfies the corresponding entropy-variable jump identity. This is a separate flux condition; it includes no fully discrete time-step entropy inequality. Conservation, admissibility, entropy stability, and convergence therefore name different properties and require their own hypotheses.

The following schematic view shows the orientation of one shared face flux. Positive flux points to the right; the same vector leaves cell i and enters cell i+1. The diagram records the indexing convention only; the update formula supplies the definition used in proofs.
