How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Global sections of an abelian sheaf

Definition

Fix a topological space X and write Ab(X) for the category of sheaves of abelian groups on X (Sheaves of abelian groups, and likewise sheaves of modules on a ringed space, form abelian categories). For a sheaf F on X put Γ(X,F):=F(X), the abelian group of global sections of F (Sections, restrictions, and global sections of a presheaf), and for a morphism φ:F→G of abelian sheaves put Γ(X,φ):=φX:F(X)⟶G(X). Since a morphism of sheaves is a morphism of the underlying presheaves, it is a family of group homomorphisms commuting with restriction (Morphisms of presheaves), and composites and identities are computed componentwise; hence F↦Γ(X,F) and φ↦Γ(X,φ) define the global-sections functor Γ(X,−):Ab(X)→Ab.

Addition of morphisms F→G is componentwise (Sheaves of abelian groups, and likewise sheaves of modules on a ringed space, form abelian categories), so Γ(X,φ+ψ)=Γ(X,φ)+Γ(X,ψ) and Γ(X,−) is additive. It is left exact: if 0→F′→F→F′′ is exact in Ab(X), then 0→Γ(X,F′)→Γ(X,F)→Γ(X,F′′) is exact (Global sections are left exact but need not preserve epimorphisms). It is not exact in general, since it need not preserve epimorphisms (Global sections are left exact but need not preserve epimorphisms).
