How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Finite CAR quasifree states and covariance

Definition

Let r≥1, let H1=Cr with ordered orthonormal basis e1,…,er, and let F−(H1)=⨁k=0r⋀kH1 be its finite-mode fermionic Fock space. Let Ar be the unital *-algebra generated by its annihilation and creation operators; it is finite-dimensional. Let cj,cj∗ be those operators in this basis, satisfying cicj+cjci=0,cicj∗+cj∗ci=δijI,ci∗cj∗+cj∗ci∗=0. A state is a complex-linear functional ω on Ar such that ω(I)=1 and ω(X∗X)≥0 for every X∈Ar. Define the gauge automorphism γθ by γθ(cj)=e−iθcj and γθ(cj∗)=eiθcj∗ for θ∈R; the CAR relations are preserved, so these assignments extend to a one-parameter family of algebra automorphisms. A state is gauge invariant when ω(γθ(X))=ω(X) for every X and every θ.

For a gauge-invariant state, define its one-particle covariance matrix C∈Mr(C) by Cji:=ω(ci∗cj). A finite gauge-invariant state is quasifree when C=C∗, 0≤C≤I, and its normally ordered moments obey the following rule: for p≠q, ω(ci1∗⋯cip∗cjq⋯cj1)=0, and for p=q, ω(ci1∗⋯cip∗cjp⋯cj1)=det⁡ ⁣[ω(cia∗cjb)]a,b=1p=det⁡ ⁣[Cjbia]a,b=1p. The empty moment is ω(I)=1. The inequalities 0≤C≤I mean ⟨Cv,v⟩≥0 and ⟨(I−C)v,v⟩≥0 for all v∈H1. Moments of words not in normal order are obtained by reordering with the displayed CAR relations.

For a Hermitian one-particle matrix h=h∗, a real chemical potential μ, and β>0, define dΓ(h−μI):=∑i,j=1rci∗(h−μI)ijcj,Z:=Tr⁡ ⁣(e−βdΓ(h−μI)),ρ:=Z−1e−βdΓ(h−μI). The finite grand Gibbs state has covariance C=(I+eβ(h−μI))−1. Here h and μ are in joules, β is in inverse joules, and C is dimensionless. The existence and uniqueness of the state for every Hermitian contraction C, and the displayed finite Gibbs covariance formula, are established by an earlier finite-dimensional result.

Remarks

The formula defines finite-mode quasifree states only. It does not assert Wick factorization for interacting states or an infinite-mode density operator.
