How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

A two-dimensional Pfaff form with a global integrating factor

Example

On U={(x,y)∈R2:x>−1}, let ω=2y dx+(1+x) dy. Its coefficients are polynomials and its dy coefficient is positive, so it is a C2 nowhere-zero one-form. The functions μ(x,y)=1+x and S(x,y)=(1+x)2y satisfy μ>0 and dS=μω on all of U.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The displayed smooth one-form on U and the coordinate definitions of dS and an integrating factor.

[F1]

A nonsingular Pfaff one-form and its horizontal paths: a nonsingular one-form is a continuously varying covector, and dS has its coordinate partial derivatives as coefficients.

[F2]

The chain rule for total derivatives: D(g∘f)(a)=Dg(f(a))∘Df(a): composition with a C1 path differentiates by the total-derivative chain rule.

Verification

1.1givenalgebra

The first derivatives of the coefficients 2y and 1+x are 0,2 and 1,0, respectively, and all their second partial derivatives vanish; hence ω is C2 and nowhere zero. Expanding S(x,y)=(1+x)2y gives S(x+h,y+k)−S(x,y)=2y(1+x)h+(1+x)2k+2(1+x)hk+yh2+h2k. The last three terms divided by h2+k2 tend to zero as (h,k)→(0,0), so dS(x,y)(h,k)=2y(1+x)h+(1+x)2k. These first derivative coefficients have continuous first partials Sxx=2y, Sxy=Syx=2(1+x) and Syy=0, so S∈C2. Thus dS=2y(1+x) dx+(1+x)2 dy=(1+x)ω=μω. Because 1+x>0 on U, both μ and dS are nowhere zero.

For any piecewise-C1 horizontal path γ, the identity in step 1.1 and [F1]–[F2] give (S∘γ)′=dS(γ˙)=μω(γ˙)=0 on the interior of each smooth piece. Thus every horizontal tangent lies in ker⁡dS=ker⁡ω along that piece.
