How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
A maximal connected portion of an inextendible causal curve inside an open subset is inextendible there
Statement
Let be a time-oriented smooth Lorentzian four-manifold (Smooth time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifolds: the geometric objects of the model), let be open subsets with the induced metric and time orientation, and let be a future causal curve (Causal curves, chronological and causal reachability, and inextendibility) that is inextendible in the Lorentzian manifold : does not converge to any point of as its parameter tends to either end of (clause (d) of Causal curves, chronological and causal reachability, and inextendibility, read with ambient set ). Let be a connected component of Then , regarded as a future causal curve in the Lorentzian manifold with the restricted fields, is inextendible in .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: open sets , a future causal curve inextendible in , and a connected component of .
Regularity and components: a future causal curve is locally absolutely continuous, hence continuous on its interval (Causal curves, chronological and causal reachability, and inextendibility, Chart independence, concatenation, reparametrization and transitivity for causal curves, Continuity of at a point of and on : the - condition, its agreement with at a limit point, and continuity at an isolated point, Intervals of : the nine order-convex forms, nondegeneracy, and length); therefore is relatively open in and each of its connected components is of the form for some in .
Inextendibility: for a future causal curve on an interval in a Lorentzian manifold , and for a real interval with (respectively ) finite, the curve is future-inextendible (respectively past-inextendible) exactly when it does not converge to a point of as the parameter tends to that end; at an unbounded end, it is one-sided inextendible exactly when it does not converge as the parameter tends to or (Causal curves, chronological and causal reachability, and inextendibility clause (d)). Convergence to a point and convergence to the same point are the same condition, since and are open subsets of the same manifold.
No choice principle is used in this item.
Proof
(Ends of a component.) Let be the component of [L1]. If then and : otherwise with open would make contain a relative neighbourhood of in , so that would extend strictly to the left of , contradicting that is a component. Similarly, if then and .
(The left end.) Suppose (finite and in the domain). By step 1.1, as along ; since limits in the ambient manifold are unique, does not converge to any point of at its past end. Suppose instead that with finite or , and that converged to some as . Then , so would converge to the point of its ambient manifold at its past end, contradicting the hypothesis that is inextendible in by [L2]. Hence in both cases does not converge to a point of at its past end.
(The right end.) The same argument with and in place of and , and with "past" replaced by "future", shows that does not converge to a point of at its future end.
(Conclusion.) The restricted curve has image in , is locally absolutely continuous, and has causal velocity almost everywhere, so it is a future causal curve of the Lorentzian manifold ([L1]); by steps 2.1 and 3.1 it converges to no point of at either end, so by [L2] it is inextendible in . This is the assertion.
Remarks
The ambient inextendibility assumption is used when a component reaches an end of the original domain. At a finite interior endpoint of a component, continuity supplies an ambient value outside the open subset, so Hausdorff uniqueness rules out a limit inside that subset. These are distinct cases; no continuation through a point outside the subset is claimed to stay within it.
