How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Hodge decomposition of two-forms in four dimensions
Statement
Let be a four-dimensional real vector space with an orientation and inner product , and let be a finite-dimensional real inner-product space. Define the Hodge operator on by , and extend it -linearly to . Give this tensor product the inner product induced by those on and . Then , is an isometry, and its and eigenspaces are orthogonal. Every has the unique decomposition
If the inner product on is rescaled to for any , then the Hodge operator on two-forms is unchanged: .

Facts & Assumptions
Given: The oriented four-dimensional inner-product space , the finite-dimensional inner-product space , and the Hodge operator and induced tensor-product inner product specified in the Statement.
The oriented space has a positively oriented orthonormal coframe, and has an orthonormal basis; these are finite-dimensional inner-product spaces.
Proof
Choose a positively oriented orthonormal coframe of . The defining wedge identity gives , , , , , and . Thus permutes the orthonormal basis of with signs, so it is an isometry; applying it twice to each of the six basis vectors gives . The same conclusions hold after tensoring each basis vector with any member of an orthonormal basis of .
For and , the identity from step 1.1 gives , , and . If and , the isometry property from step 1.1 gives , hence . The decomposition is unique because the intersection of the two eigenspaces is zero.
Under , the induced inner product on scales by because each covector factor scales by , while the oriented volume form scales by . Hence for all , . The defining wedge identity therefore gives for every ; nondegeneracy of the wedge pairing between two-forms in dimension four implies . The identity extends -linearly.
