How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
A section forces the structure group to retract from a principal bundle
Terminology
Let be a group with a topology making multiplication and inversion continuous, and write for its identity. A continuous right -action on is a continuous map , , satisfying and .
A locally trivial right principal -bundle is a surjective continuous map of topological spaces with a continuous right -action satisfying , such that the action is free ( implies ) and transitive (for each there is with ) on each fiber, and has an open cover with -equivariant homeomorphisms over . Here acts on the second factor by right multiplication. A space is weakly contractible when it is path connected and for every and .
Statement
Let be a nonempty locally trivial principal topological -bundle with right -action, and suppose it has a continuous section. For any , the fiber is a retract of . If is weakly contractible, then is path connected and for every .
The retraction is expressed by the commutative diagram with TikZ source

Facts & Assumptions
Given: The locally trivial principal bundle, its right action, and continuous section from the Statement. For the final conditional conclusion additionally assume that is weakly contractible.
A locally trivial fiber bundle has local product charts over an open cover. The free and transitive right -action and the -equivariance of the charts are the additional principal-bundle hypotheses stated above. Locally trivial fiber bundle
Based homotopy groups are functorial and invariant under based homotopy. Higher homotopy groups are functorial and based homotopy invariant
In the final implication, assume the weak-contractibility condition defined in Terminology.
Proof
Define by . Every lies over a unique and the principal action is free and transitive on , so there is a unique with . Thus is bijective. In each local principal chart, is a continuous local section and the group coordinate is continuous; these charts cover , so the inverse is continuous. The forward map is continuous by the action. Hence is a homeomorphism.
Fix . Under , the inclusion , , and the map , , satisfy . Thus is a retract. If is weakly contractible, it is path connected by [A1], so its continuous image is path connected.
Choose basepoint . The maps and are based at and , respectively, and [F2] gives . But by [A1], so has zero target; the identity on factors through zero and is zero. Therefore for each .
