How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Three-dimensional curvature is determined by Ricci curvature
Pure mathematics; a finite-dimensional Lorentz-signature tensor identity, with no empirical claim.
Statement
Let be a three-dimensional real vector space with Lorentzian inner product of signature . Let be an algebraic curvature tensor: it is antisymmetric in and in , symmetric under exchange of the pairs, and satisfies . Define and . Then
In particular, if and only if .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The finite-dimensional vector space, metric, and algebraic curvature tensor in the statement.
The metric is nondegenerate with an orthonormal basis in which ; the inverse is used for contractions.
Proof
Define to be the right-hand side of the displayed formula. Symmetry of and gives antisymmetry of in each index pair and symmetry under exchanging the pairs. Substitution into cancels the Ricci and scalar terms pairwise, so satisfies the first Bianchi identity and is an algebraic curvature tensor. Contracting the first and third indices gives Thus is an algebraic curvature tensor with zero Ricci contraction.
In the basis of [A1], an algebraic curvature tensor is represented by a symmetric matrix on the basis bivectors . Write its diagonal entries as , , and . The three diagonal zero-Ricci equations are , , and . They imply , hence .
The three off-diagonal zero-Ricci equations are , , and . They set the three off-diagonal entries of the same symmetric bivector matrix to zero. Therefore , so and the displayed identity holds. If , then its scalar contraction is zero and the formula gives ; conversely implies its Ricci contraction vanishes.
