How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Observer decomposition of a symmetric stress-energy tensor
Statement
Let be the affine Minkowski model, , open, and let be a continuous symmetric type- tensor field on (Stress-energy tensor, force density and local balance on flat spacetime). Let be future unit, , with rest projection and as in Norms of four-velocity and four-acceleration, and the observer rest-space decomposition,(c). At a point define , and . Then: (a) lies in , is symmetric and horizontal in both slots (), and (b) Contracting with gives ; hence and are determined by and , and the decomposition is unique among decompositions with and symmetric horizontal: , , . (c) In any adapted inertial orthonormal frame with , the numerical components of this decomposition are , , and , for . Define isotropic rest stress to mean for a real scalar , where . Thus means vanishing rest stress, and is the isotropic case ; isotropy permits any , including nonzero pressure or tension. These are numerical tensor identities. Physical adoption of the energy/momentum-density reading is a separate model premise; this mathematical lemma asserts no observer measurement. No choice principle is used.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The affine Minkowski model with inertial chart , its constant metric components , the inverse components and the index conventions of Lorentz forms of inertia (3,1,0) on a 4-dimensional real vector space and Oriented time-oriented affine Minkowski space (the spacetime primitives); a continuous symmetric type- field on (Stress-energy tensor, force density and local balance on flat spacetime, C^k tensor fields on affine Minkowski space and their inertial components); a future unit vector , so , with and (Norms of four-velocity and four-acceleration, and the observer rest-space decomposition,(c)). All components below are taken at one fixed point and the components are those of in an inertial chart.
Rest-space projector. The map is linear and idempotent, has image and kernel , satisfies and for all ; in components , so and . (Norms of four-velocity and four-acceleration, and the observer rest-space decomposition,(c))
Component conventions and symmetry: , , and index lowering commutes with the algebra. (Stress-energy tensor, force density and local balance on flat spacetime)
Proof
Projector identities. From [F1], ; , and ; moreover .
Expansion and horizontality. Using from step 1.1 and the symmetry of [F2], expand with the definitions of , and this is . Moreover because , and is symmetric because ; finally and by step 1.1, so is horizontal in both slots. This proves (a).
Frame components (c). In an adapted inertial orthonormal frame with one has and ; hence , and for . Substituting into the definitions gives ; , so and ; and gives and .
Contraction and uniqueness (b). Contracting the expansion of step 2.1 with and using step 1.1, . If is another decomposition with and symmetric horizontal, then contracting with gives , contracting with and comparing with the identity just proved gives , hence as ; then .
Clauses (a), (b) and (c) are proved in steps 2.1, 3.1 and 2.2. The isotropic rest stress is a definition, with exactly when ; the identities hold at every point of and use only that is a continuous symmetric field, while the physical reading of , and as measured energy density, momentum density and stress is a separate model premise not asserted here. No choice principle is used.
