How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Statement
Let be a four-dimensional time-oriented Lorentz vector space of signature , with future cone as in Time orientation, future and past timelike/null/causal vectors, and the closed cones. Let and let be a symmetric bilinear form on and a covector. If then and . If instead this identity holds for every nonzero future null vector , then and for some . The second clause is the exact massless conformal exception.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The time-oriented Lorentz vector space and the symmetric form and covector in the Statement.
There is a basis with Lorentz matrix (Every Lorentz form admits an ordered basis with matrix diag(-1,1,1,1)). Replacing its timelike basis vector by its negative when needed gives a future orthonormal basis because the time orientation selects one of the two timelike components (Time orientation, future and past timelike/null/causal vectors, and the closed cones, The timelike set has exactly two convex components, described in orthonormal coordinates).
In this basis , and the future massive and null shells have respectively , , and (Lorentz forms of inertia (3,1,0) on a 4-dimensional real vector space, Timelike, null, spacelike and causal vectors of a Lorentz vector space).
Proof
In the future massive shell write , where , and . Apply the assumed identity to the two shell vectors and and subtract. Dividing the result by gives for every and every unit . For fixed , the left side is affine in and vanishes on an interval, so ; varying yields .
On the future null cone write with and . The identity becomes for every ; comparing the two polynomial coefficients gives . Replacing by in the covector equation gives and for every , so .
The remaining massive-shell identity is , where . Varying shows is a constant on . Taking gives ; taking gives for . With the remaining identity is for every . A polynomial vanishing on an interval has all coefficients zero; since , this yields , hence .
In the quadratic null-cone equation, comparing and gives . Its value on yields , and its value on yields for . Thus with . This proves the null clause and completes the lemma.
