How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Alternative restricted creeping-flow force balance

Physical scope

Ideal creeping-flow alternative, prescribed stress/data, constant density, no unconditional NS approximation error or empirical premise.

Postulate

For a smooth constant-density incompressible Newtonian continuum in an inertial Cartesian chart, select the steady zero-inertia alternative force balance on an open region Ω⊆R3. Let ρ0>0 be constant mass density, μ>0 constant dynamic viscosity, u∈C2(Ω;R3) velocity, p∈C1(Ω) pressure and b∈C0(Ω;R3) specified body acceleration. In SI units, ρ0 is kg m−3, μ is Pa s, u is m s−1, b is m s−2, and p is in pascals. Adopt div⁡u=0,σ=−pI+2μD,div⁡σ+ρ0b=0,D=12(∇u+∇uT). Here (∇u)ij=∂jui and (div⁡σ)i=∑j∂jσij. This is an alternative zero-inertia branch: the full material-acceleration momentum equation is not also imposed on the same field. For constant μ, the adopted balance is equivalent to −∇p+μΔu+ρ0b=0. The Postulate does not assert that small Reynolds number alone yields this branch, provide an approximation error or solution-existence result, or establish empirical validity. Boundary and far-field data remain separate.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: Smooth fields, constant ρ0,μ>0, specified body acceleration and the adopted steady zero-inertia alternative force law.

[A1]

Newtonian stress and Fourier conductive closure: the selected mechanical closure is σ=−pI+2μD in the constant-density incompressible subcase.

[A2]

Specified wall, thermal, periodic and initial data: boundary and far-field data are separately selected and are not implied by the local force law.

[F1]

Classical frames, primitive quantities and SI units: Newtonian spacetime has absolute time in seconds and oriented Euclidean affine three-space; an inertial Cartesian chart is an orientation-preserving affine isometry from that space to R3, with coordinates in metres and chart changes t∗=t+t0, x∗=Qx+vt+a for constant Q∈SO(3), relative velocity v in m s−1, and translation a in metres. Here a frame means the adapted chart, not an observer congruence or basis field.

Formulation notes

The steady zero-inertia balance is an adopted alternative branch, not a deduction from the full material-acceleration equation or from experimental data. For constant μ, componentwise differentiation gives div⁡(2μD)=μΔu+μ∇div⁡u. Incompressibility therefore makes the adopted force law equivalent to −∇p+μΔu+ρ0b=0. Boundary and far-field data remain separate inputs; this algebraic equivalence supplies no approximation-error or solvability claim.
