How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Scalar engineering dimensions and tree-level dilation
Statement
Let , let (the smooth real-valued functions with compact support), let be an integer, and let . The Euclidean gradient is and its squared norm is . With Lebesgue measure on , define the real-valued functionals
They are finite because and its derivatives have compact support. Use the following formal natural-unit mass-degree convention: set , assign degree to each coordinate (), degree to each partial derivative, and degree to ; degrees add under products. Normalize both displayed functionals as dimensionless action terms of degree . The symbols and denote their formal mass degrees in this convention; these are the engineering dimensions. They are and . Under the dilation for , and . Call the monomial relevant, marginal, or irrelevant at tree level according as this dilation exponent is positive, zero, or negative. Thus a quartic monomial has exponent : it is relevant for , marginal by engineering dimension for , and irrelevant for . These labels concern only this classical engineering-dimension convention; no quantum correction, fixed point, or renormalization-group flow is asserted.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: , , , integer , and real scalar .
The statement's formal natural-unit mass-degree convention assigns , , , and degree to both and ; degrees add under products, with .
The specified functionals are the Lebesgue integrals of the Euclidean-gradient and monomial densities in the statement; compact support makes both integrals finite.
Proof
Given: The dimension convention [A1] and the functionals and domain in [A2].
Since has degree and has degree , its integrand has degree . Each Euclidean partial derivative contributes degree , so and .
By the chain rule, for each . With , Lebesgue measure contributes and the two differentiated fields contribute , so .
By [A1], has degree , so its integrand must have degree . Therefore , and substituting step 1.1 gives .
For the monomial, the same Lebesgue change of variables gives . At the exponent is , whose sign gives the stated relevant, marginal, or irrelevant tree-level label.
