How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Research labels confer no theorem premises
A bounded, source-based statement of inference limits for selected semiclassical-collapse, horizon-algebra, apparent-horizon, island, and JT results reviewed through 22 October 2026. It records their model assumptions and the exact non-claims of the adopted semiclassical equation. It does not prove nonexistence of a result elsewhere, falsify a universal claim, establish a measured fact, or imply microscopic unitarity.
Remark
This bounded source-status report distinguishes research questions, reported source results, and adopted physical postulates. A generalized second law (GSL) in these sources is nondecrease of as the horizon cut moves to the future, in their natural units; is cut area and is the entropy of exterior quantum fields. The fixed-coupling equation is an effective model below its supplied cutoff; it adopts a field equation and causal prescription but does not assert existence, uniqueness, or stability of a solution. A cut-associated horizon algebra here is a unital complex -subalgebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert space , assigned by a specified model to the exterior of a horizon cut and closed in the weak-operator topology; weak-operator convergence means for every . For a density operator (a positive trace-class operator of trace one on a Hilbert space) and its trace, its von Neumann entropy is , with . The horizon-algebra hypotheses in the cited proofs include the required relations between these algebras for ordered cuts and the stated reference modular flow. “Semiclassical” means that the metric is treated as a classical background while quantum matter, and any explicitly retained perturbative gravitational degrees of freedom, are evaluated at the stated order. Wall's proof requires its specified horizon algebras and their inclusion, semiclassical gravitational assumptions, and compatible renormalized-entropy limits; it does not supply the solution or limit hypotheses of the open problem.
Let be a smooth Lorentzian manifold with signature and Levi-Civita connection , the unique torsion-free, metric-compatible connection. A smooth vector field is Killing when , equivalently , where . A Killing horizon is a smooth embedded codimension-one null hypersurface whose induced metric has a one-dimensional radical, on which is null, tangent, and normal, with nonzero except possibly on a bifurcation surface . A bifurcate Killing horizon is a pair of such hypersurfaces meeting at a spacelike codimension-two surface where and is nonzero on each horizon away from . A state on is a positive normalized linear functional; it is faithful if implies , and normal if it is ultraweakly continuous. For such a faithful normal state , let be its GNS representation, obtained by completing for with inner product , representation , and cyclic vector , let be the closure of the antilinear map , and put . The modular automorphism group is defined by . For this modular action, on the Hilbert space of square-integrable -valued functions, define and . The crossed product is the weak-operator-closed unital -algebra generated by and these for ; this regular representation satisfies . The gravitational crossed products in the cited papers also adjoin the stated gravitational charges and impose the corresponding constraints. Faulkner and Speranza derive a GSL for arbitrary cuts of a Killing horizon in this construction when the reference modular flow is geometric on the horizon. Their semiclassical states have a slowly varying wavefunction for the asymptotic gravitational-charge reference variable, so the conjugate time-shift fluctuations are suppressed. In that limit the algebra entropy agrees with their generalized entropy up to a state-independent constant. Their computed corrections start at second order in the semiclassical expansion, but they do not establish monotonicity after including those corrections. A Type II factor, used in the stationary-algebra results, is a von Neumann algebra with scalar center, no minimal projections, and a faithful normal semifinite trace; Type II means its identity has infinite trace.
A dynamical quantum-reference-frame (QRF) cut in Kirklin's ideal model is an auxiliary Hilbert factor for each cut, with the self-adjoint multiplication operator on domain ; is the cut's affine horizon coordinate. Its conjugate translation generator is with domain and . The source's self-adjoint boost/dilation generator is , defined as the closure from the dense space . The exterior region is defined relationally by this quantum location, rather than by a fixed classical cut. For an earlier cut and later cut , the source defines , the generator of the later cut's boost around the earlier cut. Perturbative gravity here means that gravitational degrees of freedom are quantized order by order about a classical spacetime background. For ordered cuts, Kirklin proves the exact inequality for the von Neumann entropies of their outside-region algebras. Here are the exterior regions of the later and earlier cuts; and are the source's gauge-invariant von Neumann algebras assigned to them. The later-cut subalgebra is Type I, meaning it is isomorphic as a von Neumann algebra to the full bounded-operator algebra for its Hilbert factor ; its trace is . For the state , let be the corresponding positive trace-class operator with . Thus . The source's is the generator defined above, and . This free-energy term can have either sign. Recovery of the usual GSL uses an approximate leading-order semiclassical limit with a UV cutoff, meaning a regularization of short-distance or high-frequency field modes, and additional cut conditions implying , for example, a later-cut density operator with has zero cut entropy, and the additional hypothesis then gives . A product state with a mixed cut factor does not suffice. The source obtains the sign only at retained leading order in a classical-cut approximation using sharply peaked dressed relative position and a nonnegative mean dressed null-translation generator for the cut; these conditions are additional to the UV-cutoff semiclassical reduction and do not bound discarded corrections. This construction does not establish regulator independence for the local finite-regulator entropy in the open problem.
Kudler-Flam, Leutheusser, and Satishchandran prove their Type II algebra structure result for a linear Klein–Gordon field on spacetimes with a bifurcate Killing horizon, assuming a stationary state (invariant under the Killing flow) and suitable asymptotic decay of solutions; stationarity does not require the KMS thermal condition. For a strongly continuous one-parameter automorphism group and inverse temperature , the KMS condition requires that for every pair of entire analytic observables and every , . Their stated entropy identification applies to the resulting stationary algebra settings, not a collapse solution. Ali and Suneeta establish a local GSL in their crossed-product construction for maximally extended static and Kerr black-hole settings, with the gravitational constraints imposed on each partial Cauchy slice; a causal curve here is a piecewise map from an interval whose tangent is consistently future- or past-directed and causal on each smooth piece; a partial Cauchy slice is an achronal spacelike hypersurface segment met at most once by every such curve. Neither result supplies a general nonstationary collapse theorem.
For Jia, Qi, and Gao, an apparent horizon is a hypersurface foliated by spacelike codimension-two cuts on which the outgoing null expansion vanishes. In a surface chart with induced metric components , the cut's area density is . For its selected smooth outgoing null normal field , the expansion is , the fractional rate of change of area density along . In their model, is the gravitational Lagrangian as a function of scalar curvature , and . On a region where , the generalized expansion is , with the selected outward null normal; their generalized apparent horizon is the locus foliated by cuts with . They show that, to first order about a stationary black-hole background, the dynamical entropy in this model equals the Wald entropy on that generalized apparent horizon, using the paper's natural units. Their replica calculation identifies the renormalized generalized entropy only at leading local area-law order; it is not a nonperturbative result for the open problem.
In the island calculation reviewed by Almheiri and coauthors, an island is a disconnected bulk region included with the radiation region in the semiclassical field entropy. In the source's natural units the candidate functional is , where is the von Neumann entropy of the radiation and island fields in the semiclassical state; one first extremizes over candidate boundaries and then minimizes over the extrema and island choices. The replica trick computes by forming the gravitational path integral on copies and analytically continuing in . A replica saddle is a stationary point of the gravitational action on that replicated geometry, possibly in the complexified metric space, whose contribution is included by the chosen integration contour; a replica-wormhole saddle connects interiors of different copies. The review explicitly leaves the integration contour (the integration cycle selecting path-integral contributions), included saddles, cutoff treatment, and relation between the semiclassical field state and the exact full-quantum-gravity state unresolved. JT denotes two-dimensional Jackiw–Teitelboim gravity. The cited matrix integral reproduces its formal genus expansion, the sum of contributions indexed by the number of handles, through a matrix ensemble, a probability law on matrices whose observables are averaged over that law. A nonperturbative completion means additional exact model data beyond that formal expansion; the completion is not unique. The adopted JT disk supplier fixes only a genus-zero, one-boundary continuous density and selects no individual exact Hamiltonian or completion.
These sources do not by themselves establish that every specified interacting four-dimensional curved-spacetime matter theory and nonstationary collapse solution satisfies the local fixed-scheme regulator-independent limit asked for in the open problem, or that generic evaporation is unitary. This is a bounded summary of the cited material through 22 October 2026, not an exhaustive literature census or a theorem that no such result exists elsewhere. It neither refutes those broader claims nor supplies them as premises.
