How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Finite Gibbs free-energy and entropy optimization
Statement
Let act on a finite-dimensional complex Hilbert space of dimension , , , , and . Put , , and , with . Then every density matrix , including rank-deficient matrices, satisfies with equality if and only if . Moreover , so . This is finite-dimensional mathematical optimization; actual preparation is a separate postulate.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A finite-dimensional Hermitian , , , a density matrix , and natural logarithms.
is the mathematical energy matrix and is a parameter; when SI units are used, is J, is in J, and is J/K.
Finite matrix spectral and state calculus: finite Hermitian matrices have real eigenvalues and a basis-independent trace.
Quantum spectral entropy and relative-entropy domains: on support inclusion.
Proof
By [F1], write with real . Then has strictly positive eigenvalues , so , is faithful, and .
By [F2] and step 1.1, All terms are finite because the dimension is finite and is faithful.
For the inequality and its equality case, diagonalize on its support and let be the eigenvalues of in the basis. Set . The overlap weights in each row sum to one, so concavity of gives , with equality only when all having positive overlap in that row are equal. Also , with equality only at . Consequently because and . Together with step 2.1 this proves the claimed free-energy inequality. If , all inequalities are equalities. Strictness of the scalar inequality gives ; equality in strict concavity of means lies in one eigenspace of , so . The sum of the is then one, so . In an orthonormal basis of that finite complement every diagonal quadratic form of is nonnegative and their sum is zero, so each vanishes. Its positive square root therefore annihilates that basis and the entire complement. For every in that orthogonal complement, this gives , hence ; therefore has no support outside . Together with , this proves . Conversely gives .
For , step 1.1 gives . Substitution of and gives , as stated.
