How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Finite-budget Howard policy iteration for a discounted generator Bellman system

Definition

For the finite system of Finite-state discounted generator Bellman system, order each finite set Ai by its declared indices and put P=∏i∈S∣Ai∣. The procedure takes a positive integer evaluation budget K∈N, K≥1 (default K=P), and proceeds as follows.

  1. Initialize π0(i) to the least-index action in Ai.
  2. For the current policy πk, solve exactly AπkVk=rπk.
  3. Form the strict-improvement set Jk={i:max⁡a∈Ai(QiaVk+ria)>Qiπk(i)Vk+riπk(i)}, where QiaV=∑jqijaVj.
  4. If Jk=∅, return (converged,πk,Vk).
  5. If Jk≠∅ and k+1=K, return (budget_exhausted,πk,Vk); this status makes no Bellman-solution claim.
  6. Otherwise, at each i∈Jk switch to the least-index maximizing action in Ai; retain πk(i) at every state outside Jk and continue.

The policy matrix solve is well-defined by Inverse positivity of discounted finite-state policy matrices. A budget of P policy evaluations is sufficient by the theorem below.

Dependency tree · two levels

11 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
