How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Budgeted ordered Hermitian eigenvalue bisection by verified inertia
Definition
Input , a nonempty family of Hermitian matrices enclosed by conjugate-symmetric interval rectangles, tolerance , a total query budget , and a fixed ordering, block plan and threshold for the interval inertia certifier. Interpret all interval endpoints and shifts exactly.
-
Outward-compute by bounding each entry modulus and summing their squares. If a finite bound cannot be obtained, return
inconclusivewith no eigenvalue intervals. Otherwise initialize, for each increasing index , the bracket and successful-query count . The Frobenius eigenvalue bound guarantees that these brackets contain every eigenvalue of every family member. -
Repeat while fewer than total queries have been used and there is an index whose bracket width exceeds and which has not been marked blocked. Choose the least such index . Query its exact midpoint . Run Outward interval block LDL inertia certifier with pivot-inconclusive status on the shifted family with the fixed plan. If the result is
pivot-inconclusive, or its certified inertia has nonzero zero-count, mark this index blocked and leave unchanged. Otherwise set , the certified number of negative eigenvalues. If , replace the upper endpoint of by ; if , replace the lower endpoint by . Increase by one. A certified update halves the bracket width. Stop when the query budget is used or no such index exists. -
Return every current bracket with status
enclosedwhen its width is at most ,inconclusiveif its index was blocked, orbudget-exhaustedif the total budget ended first. A zero-width initial bracket is already complete. Neither blocked pivots nor exhausted budget alter an existing bracket.
The algorithm does not perturb a shift to force an LDL pivot and does not infer singularity from a failed factorization. It returns uniform outer intervals for a family; it does not identify eigenvalue branches across parameter values.
Depends on
- Certified inertia counts maintain ordered eigenvalue brackets
- Outward interval block LDL inertia certifier with pivot-inconclusive status
- The interval block LDL certifier returns the exact inertia on success
- Hermitian eigenvalues lie within a certified Frobenius bound
- Real intervals, complex rectangles and ball enclosures
- Outward-rounded interval, rectangle and ball operations
- Outward-rounded operations are inclusion-isotone and enclose DAG evaluations

21 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
