How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

UCRL2 for finite communicating MDPs

Definition

Assume the Axiom of Choice for the interaction path law. The learner is given a finite nonempty state set S, a finite nonempty action set A(s) for each s∈S, the observed initial state s1∈S, a horizon T≥1, a confidence parameter δ∈(0,1), and fixed orders of the states and each state's actions. Let S=∣S∣ and A=max⁡s∈S∣A(s)∣. Its unknown environment is a finite communicating MDP on S and these action sets with rewards in [0,1]; the transition kernel, reward laws, and their means are not inputs to the learner. At interaction t, the learner observes the current state St, chooses an admissible action, and then observes the realized reward ρt and next state St+1.

Initialize t=1 and S1=s1. At the start tk of episode k, let Nk(s,a) be the total number of visits to (s,a) before tk. If Nk(s,a)>0, let r^k(s,a) be the mean of the rewards observed on those visits and P^k(⋅∣s,a) their empirical next-state law. If Nk(s,a)=0, set r^k(s,a)=0 and set P^k(⋅∣s,a) to the point mass at the first state in the fixed state order. Put nk(s,a)=max⁡{1,Nk(s,a)} and bkr(s,a)=7log⁡(2SAtk/δ)2nk(s,a),bkp(s,a)=14Slog⁡(2Atk/δ)nk(s,a). Set r~k(s,a)=min⁡{1,r^k(s,a)+bkr(s,a)}. Run extended value iteration with these estimates/radii and tolerance 1/tk, obtaining a stationary deterministic policy πk. Set every within-episode count vk(s,a)=0 and execute the following loop. While t≤T, observe St, choose at=πk(St), observe ρt and St+1, increment vk(St,at) and the all-history count for (St,at), record this reward/transition observation, and retain the observed next state as the current state for the next interaction. Increment t by one. End the episode immediately after an interaction when its pair's count reaches vk(s,a)=max⁡{1,Nk(s,a)}, where Nk remains the episode-start count; if t≤T, begin the next episode, otherwise terminate. All action and transition-vector ties use the fixed orders.

15 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
