How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
A fixed POVM need not attain ensemble Holevo information
Statement refuted
Every fixed POVM applied to an ensemble extracts its full Holevo information.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The equiprobable ensemble of the computational basis states on a qubit, and the fixed -basis POVM with effects , where .
Finite classical-quantum states and Holevo information: the ensemble Holevo information is the entropy of the average state minus the average output entropy.
Finite mutual information: for finite classical variables, mutual information measures dependence and equals zero when the joint law is the product of its marginals.
Finite POVMs and their outcome law: the outcome probability on state for POVM effect is .
The finite Holevo measurement bound: every finite POVM has classical mutual information at most the ensemble Holevo information.
Density operator and Complex spectral theorem: a normal endomorphism of a finite-dimensional complex inner product space has an orthonormal eigenbasis, and conversely: the pure qubit basis projectors and their average are density operators with the displayed spectra.
Counterexample
The average state is , while each individual state is pure. By [F1] and [F5], its Holevo information is nats.
For either input or , the squared inner products with and are both by [F3]. Hence every joint input-output probability is , and each marginal probability is . The finite mutual-information sum in [F2] is therefore . This is strictly below from step 1.1, while still satisfying the Holevo upper bound [F4].

Dependency tree · two levels
38 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
