How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Positive kernel second moment does not imply nondegenerate first projections
Statement refuted
For a two-sample order- kernel, positivity of its second moment under every P/Q assignment implies that both first-projection variances are positive.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The Rademacher law, the kernel above, and the definitions in Two-sample order-r U-statistic and first projections.
Two-sample order-r U-statistic and first projections: the parameter is and the first projections are conditional section expectations centered by .
Second-moment order of the degenerate remainder: if both first projections vanish, then for this fixed-order kernel.
Moments, variance, and covariance on a probability space: variance is the expected squared centered deviation.
Counterexample
Let be the Rademacher law, assigning probability to each of and . Take and
Given: Independent Rademacher observations in both groups and the specified kernel. Verify the null, moments, and first projections.
The kernel is symmetric within each block and changes sign when the blocks are exchanged. Since each Rademacher variable has mean zero, [F1] gives .
The products and are independent Rademacher variables. Hence . Because , this same strictly positive finite second moment holds for every assignment of the four kernel arguments.
For every fixed , ; for every fixed , . Thus and both first-projection variances vanish.
By [F2], , so in when . The positive kernel second moment therefore does not provide a nondegenerate normal pivot; the explicit positive first-projection assumptions in the asymptotic theorem cannot be dropped.

16 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
