How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Double-cover correction terms obstruct smooth sliceness
Statement
Assume AC. Let be a smooth oriented knot admitting a smooth properly embedded disk (a smooth embedding of the closed disk with interior in and boundary ). Let be its connected double cover branched along , so , and let be the oriented double branched cover of using the positive-meridian convention. Then . Define the torsion linking pairing on by when , with signed intersection in the oriented . Under Poincare duality, the restriction image of in is an affine coset of a subgroup with , where ; such a subgroup is a metabolizer. It has . Every extending structure in this coset satisfies . No conclusion is asserted for a merely locally flat topological disk (a topological embedding with local flat disk charts but no smoothness hypothesis) or for nonextending boundary structures.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: AC, a smooth oriented knot , and a smooth proper slice disk .
AC is assumed by the smooth slice-cover and extension-set suppliers (The Axiom of Choice).
The connected cover branched over is a rational homology four-ball and its oriented boundary is the connected cyclic double branched cover (The smooth slice-disk double cover is a rational homology ball, Cyclic branched cover of a knot).
Poincaré–Lefschetz duality and the cohomology long exact sequence of compute the rational cohomology of from that of . Universal coefficients and closed-manifold Poincaré duality identify it with the rational homology of (Poincaré–Lefschetz duality, Long exact sequence of a pair in singular cohomology, The universal coefficient theorem for cohomology over a PID, Poincaré duality for oriented topological manifolds).
For a rational ball with connected rational-homology-sphere boundary, the extending Spin structures form one affine coset of a self-annihilating subgroup for the chain linking pairing, and that subgroup has square-root order (Spin-c extensions over a rational ball form a metabolizer coset).
A Spin structure extending over a smooth rational homology four-ball has correction term zero (Correction terms vanish on extending Spin-c structures over rational homology balls).
Proof
Given: The data above.
Apply [F1] to . It gives a connected oriented rational homology four-ball with connected boundary .
Since , universal coefficients give and for . By [F2], is zero except for . The pair sequence and connectedness of give and ; also . Closed-manifold Poincaré duality now gives .
Apply [F3] to . The restriction image is one affine coset of a self-annihilating subgroup for the chain torsion linking pairing, and . The hypotheses hold by steps 1.1 and 2.1.
Every structure in the restriction image of step 3.1 extends over , so [F4] gives for each such structure. The proof used a smooth disk in [F1]; it does not apply to a merely locally flat topological disk. It makes no statement about structures outside the restriction image.
