How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Balanced taut sutured manifolds and characteristic product regions

Definition

A sutured manifold (M,γ) consists of a compact oriented 3-manifold M with boundary and a union γ of pairwise disjoint annuli and tori in ∂M. Each annulus contains a suture, its oriented core circle; write A(γ) for the annuli and s(γ) for the union of their cores. Orient each component of R(γ)=∂M∖int⁡(γ) so that its boundary orientation agrees in the annulus with the homology class of the suture. The regions whose normal points out of M form R+(γ) and those whose normal points into M form R−(γ). The sutured manifold is balanced when M has no closed component, χ(R+)=χ(R−), and every component of ∂M meets an annular component of γ. It is irreducible when every embedded 2-sphere in M bounds a 3-ball in M. A properly embedded surface S is incompressible when it has no compressing disk. A compressing disk is an embedded disk D⊂M with ∂D⊂S, D∩S=∂D, and ∂D an essential simple closed curve in S (that is, it does not bound a disk in S). For a compact surface S put x(S)=∑Sjmax⁡(0,−χ(Sj)), where the sum is over its connected components. The Thurston norm x(α) of a relative homology class α∈H2(M,γ;Z) is the minimum of x(S) over properly embedded oriented representatives S with ∂S⊂γ and [S]=α. Such a representative is norm-minimizing when it is incompressible and x(S)=x(α). A balanced sutured manifold is taut when it is irreducible and R(γ) is norm-minimizing in H2(M,γ;Z).

A product sutured manifold is (R×[0,1],∂R×[0,1]) for a compact oriented surface R, with positive and negative regions R×{1} and R×{0}. A properly embedded oriented surface S⊂M is a decomposing surface when every component λ of S∩γ is either a properly embedded nonseparating arc in an annular component meeting its suture once, a simple closed curve in an annular component homologous to that suture, or a homotopically nontrivial curve in a toroidal component, with all such curves in one torus component representing the same homology class. A product disk is a decomposing surface that is a disk and meets the sutures in exactly two points. A product annulus is a decomposing annulus with one boundary circle in R+ and one in R−. A horizontal surface S in a balanced sutured manifold is a decomposing surface with no closed component, ∣∂S∣=∣s(γ)∣, [S]=[R+] in H2(M,γ;Z), and χ(S)=χ(R+). The sutured manifold is vertically prime when every horizontal surface is parallel to R+ or R−, where parallel means that the surfaces cobound an embedded product between them.

When (M,γ) is irreducible, γ has no torus component, and R+ and R− are incompressible and diffeomorphic, a product region is a submanifold Φ×[0,1]⊂M for a compact possibly disconnected surface Φ such that Φ×{0} and Φ×{1} are incompressible subsurfaces of R− and R+, respectively. A characteristic product region is a product region E×[0,1] such that every product region Φ×[0,1] can be carried into it by an ambient isotopy of M.
