How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Natural cubic smoothing spline

Definition

Assume AC. Let [a,b] be a bounded interval, let (xi,yi)i=1n∈([a,b]×R)n, assume at least two distinct input values, and let λ>0. For g∈W2,2(a,b) use its unique continuous representative on [a,b] supplied by the one-dimensional Sobolev representative theorem. The natural cubic smoothing spline is the unique minimizer, whose existence and uniqueness are proved in Existence, uniqueness, and spline reduction for cubic smoothing ↗, of J(g)=∑i=1n(yi−g(xi))2+λ∫ab∣D2g(t)∣2 dt.

The requirement of two distinct inputs is essential. The penalty is the squared L2 norm of the second weak derivative. The data term includes every observation, including repeated inputs; only the spline knots are the distinct input values, as in Natural cubic splines.

Dependency tree · two levels

33 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
