How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Threshold-band singular-value approximation
Definition
Let have a singular value decomposition as in Every linear map between finite-dimensional real or complex inner product spaces admits a singular value decomposition, let , and let . Write for the orthogonal projection onto the span of right singular vectors whose singular values are at least , and for the span of right singular vectors whose singular values lie in . For any orthogonal projection with range contained in , a threshold-band target is
The choice inside the threshold band is allowed to vary; all singular directions above the band are retained and all directions below it are discarded. The definition is independent of the choice of orthonormal bases within singular subspaces because it is stated using their subspaces. If a singular value equals the upper endpoint it belongs to ; equality at the lower endpoint belongs to . A range contained in contributes zero to . However, an allowed can mix nullspace directions with nonzero singular directions when both lie in , so changing that projection can change the target.

13 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
