How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Phase-aware binary Clifford tableau

Definition

Fix the generator order X1,…,Xn,Z1,…,Zn and label order (x,z), with wire indices as in Phase aware n qubit pauli group. For an actual Clifford unitary U∈Cn, write each exact generator image uniquely as

UXjU∗=P(kj,xj,zj),UZjU∗=P(kn+j,xn+j,zn+j).

Its phase-aware binary Clifford tableau is the pair (S,p), where S∈M2n(F2) has as its ordered columns the 2n labels (xj,zj) just listed and p=(k1,…,k2n)∈(Z/4Z)2n. The phase vector retains the exact mod-4 generator-image phases; it is not discarded with the binary labels. The columns define the unique linear map on Vn taking the ordered standard basis to those columns. Only pairs arising from a Clifford are called Clifford tableaux; arbitrary binary matrices and phase vectors need not be valid. A scalar global phase on U does not change its tableau.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: an actual unitary U∈Cn and the fixed generator order.

[F1]

Binary Pauli quotient isomorphism: every Pauli operator has a unique exact parameter triple (k,x,z).

[F2]

Clifford normalizer: conjugation by U maps each Pauli generator into Pn.

[F3]

Binary Pauli label and quotient: Vn=F2n⊕F2n with coordinatewise vector operations.

Proof

1.1givenF1F2construct

By [F2], each of the 2n conjugated generators is some P(k,x,z); [F1] makes this phase and label unique, so the phase vector and binary columns are well-defined.

2.1givenF1F3step 1.1algebra∎

The labels of X1,…,Xn,Z1,…,Zn are the ordered coordinate basis of Vn by [F3]. Let their image labels be ℓ1,…,ℓ2n and define SU(a1,…,a2n)=∑j=12najℓj. Coordinatewise addition and scalar multiplication distribute over this finite sum, so SU is linear and takes each ordered basis vector to its prescribed column. Any other linear map with those columns agrees on every vector because every vector is the corresponding finite coordinate combination. Multiplying U by any unit-modulus scalar leaves each conjugation unchanged, so its phase vector and tableau are unchanged.
