How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Scalar Gaussian 3DVAR returns the exact analysis mean
Example
Take a scalar Gaussian forecast with mean and variance , observation map , error variance , and observed value . The 3DVAR objective is .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: AC and the one-dimensional Gaussian prior/error model, with and .
AC is assumed for the Gaussian laws and conditional-law results. The Axiom of Choice
The one-step linear-Gaussian model uses independent Gaussian initial and observation errors. Linear-Gaussian state-space models with independent noises
The 3DVAR gain is and its analysis is . Finite-dimensional 3DVAR analysis
The 3DVAR objective minimizer is the Gaussian MAP point and coincides with the Kalman analysis mean under these hypotheses. The 3DVAR quadratic has the Gaussian MAP and Kalman analysis update
The exact Kalman analysis covariance is when the innovation is positive definite. Exact linear-Gaussian Kalman filter
Under AC the Kalman recursion is the exact Gaussian conditional law. The finite-horizon linear-Gaussian Kalman filter is exact
Verification
Given: The objects and observations in the Example.
Here and . Thus the analysis is .
The independent Gaussian prior and observation-error model in the Example is the one-step model specified by [F1]. Completing the square gives , so its unique minimizer is , agreeing with step 1.1 and [F3]. The Kalman covariance is by [F4]; [F5] therefore identifies the exact conditional law as . The 3DVAR output is its MAP point and supplies no covariance output.

Dependency tree · two levels
43 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
